Stories about the DmD 2004

DmD considered as poetry

Auch dieses jahr hat wieder gezeigt,
viele viller sind bereit,
zu fahren viele kilometer,
alle kamen an,
manche früher, manche später,

gruppe.jpg
treffen.jpg

Brussels or the right way at home

Just thought I'd start a new thread about stories arising from the DMD meet. An event not to be be missed, best holiday we've had for years. The convoy, complete with Police escort was fantastic.

On the way to Lux we got caught up in Brussels, going through what turns to be the only tunnel several times. It took us two hours to be spat out the other side of the City.

Enroute back home I promised we wouldn't get caught again, oh no.

But guess what?
We did, and ended up driving round the City centre for over an hour. Then, just as we had given up hope, a van pulled up alongside the bike, and through the driving rain I made for him to wind down his window.
"Can you point me to Gent?"

"Hey, you Englander?" he said, "I biker, been your country before, follow me I show you way"
Result!!!!

We followed his van up hill, down dale, through alleyways and across major junctions with three lanes of traffic jostling for position. Nobody was going to get between me and that van, and we nearly got killed making sure it didn't happen !

Half and hour later and we were on our way to Gent.

Guardian angels do exist you know, and there's the evidence. A quick handshake and a smile was all the reward he wanted, I'll bet he felt good that night.

What a top man.

Bikers are the last cowboys, long may they reign.
See that film "Open Range" with Robert Duvall and Kevin Costner, nothing to do with biking, but you'll understand all about biking after seeing it.

Look forward to any more stories. I'll be posting some photos on the site soon.

Unusually-shaped tyre

I was the lucky begger to arrive on Thursday evening at 10pm and check into the hotel. Hurray
we'd arrived (longest single trip so far with pillion - done lots of shorter trips but this was the longest).

On the morning, I was informed that I had an unusually-shaped tyre and where did I get it.... you guessed it - it was flat - but only on the bottom

A quick check with the DMD Reception desk revealed no ideas for replacements other than some "emergency" air/sealant. The hotel receptionist suggested Fischers down the road, who, in turn, suggested a place in DieKirch (opposite the Cactus Inn shopping complex near Mcdonalds!).

Emergency air bought and applied, petrol bought, and tyre pressures checked, and off I set for DieKirch at a low low speed of around 30mph . Arrival at tyre place, revealed a distinct lack of language skills on my part, a lack of motorcycle tyres on their part

The engineer, however, pointed my (in french and map drawing) to the next place - Mersch and Heine Gericke - now thats a name I know well

Off I toddle on my DV - still pumped up and a 3cm nail embedded somewhere in the carcass. Keep the speed low. Finds the place eventually, and the shopkeeper informed me (this time in German) that they used to have a "mechanics" corner in the shop but no longer . He did point me in the direction of a place 2 villages down (Rollingen). Off we go again!

5 minutes later (I kid you not - it was really close!) and I pulled up at MotoPort bikers shop at 12.45 - shop closed for lunch. Nice to sit in the sun for a while.

Shop opens and in halting/pidgeon french/german and english explains what I needed. Got quoted a price - take visa? yes!! Result. Another customer (a Dutchman) explained to him for me that the tyre was full of emergency air/sealant - no problems.

Thats it I thought..... oh no..... no tyres anywhere in Luxembourg from his usual supplier - on the telephone to ring round. 15 companies later - a tyre appears in Luxembourg city He toddles off to get it - back in 1 hour (ein stunde!).

Good as his word, he turns up in his van an hour later while I have a good look at his shop - lots of leathers/textiles and waterproofs, boots, and all other assorted motorcycling goodies 15-30 minutes to change the tyre, charge my visa card and good as new oo-err missus, I have to break in a new tyre in a foreign country, 2 up with luggage. :-s

No problems there though, and we didn't let it spoil the trip either. Took back some business cards just in case someone else had the misfortune to obtain a strange-shaped tyre on their bike.

Travel Report

Ciao a tutti.

Oldoc (Andrea)

1. Norfolk Line did it's best to keep me from arriving. Setting off 45 minutes late because of a problem with one one the engines, they managed to retsart it mid channel. However, this appeared to blow a main fuse, and ALL the engines stopped....
"Bing Bong, this is your Captain speaking, we are presently drifting, but there is no need to worry"
So I arrived at my hotel @ 23:50 instead of 22:15.

2. Making an early start from the F1 full of school children running up and down the corridor all night (God bless the person who invented earplugs), I arrived at the Auchan petrol station 30 minutes before the attendant. The 24/7 pumps were not operating, and I was running on fumes. A kind Frenchman in his car escorted me to the nearest BP station after trying to explain that it was on the wrong side of the A16. What a nice man.

3. Had extremely lucky run down to Vianden, dodging huge black clouds and riding on streaming wet roads.
First chips + mayonaise of the trip at Stavelot.

4. Great campsite with UK, Dutch, German, and Czech/Slovak inhabitants

5. The visit to the castle, the run with Helmut, the cavalcade back to base, and the Saturday meal were all superb. I won a Tee Shirt in the raffle, and a Lady in a drinking competition.

6. Murray and I upholding the UK's honour and being amongst the rabble thrown out at 02:45.

7. A rather slow day on Sunday . Where were you that evening Carl and Ron??

8. Chinon near Tours to Calais on Thursday, 360 miles in windy weather.

And probably lots more.
Here's hoping next years trip fits in nicely with my shift pattern.

Glad to see folks have returned safely (if not comfortably!!).

I took a 2 day trip to Vianden, camped at Watten near St.Omer (nice little site).
Day 2 I was half way across Belgium when Dean+Heidi caught up, so we continued in convoy, some very pleasant "detours" (ahem) were included. It seemed half the Luxembourg motorways were being dug up, for some reason.

We had one strip of camp-site set aside for the DVs, and it was only a couple of hundred metres walk along the riverside the town.

tourville.jpg

Nice run out on Friday with Helmut+30 or so, got a real feel for the Luxembourg scenery and roads; what they may have lacked in surface quality they made up for in entertainment.

Tour of the Castle was great, and the civic reception in the grand Knights-hall made us all feel welcome.

Saturday's outing was interesting. A few of us got separated from the main crowd when we stopped to don wets, but we made our own tour, had a nice lunch, and rendezvoused (spelling??) at Esche-sur-Sure for the big photo shoot and the brilliant cavalcade back to Vianden. I was near the back, so got a great view of around 200 bikes (probably about 2km worth) stretching into the distance. The 2 police riders did a great job of stopping cars on roundabouts and junctions to let us through.

Excellent stuff all round.
I got home at 2am this morning after taking in some of France's finest northern scenery.

PS, the ferry passed the Queen Mary 2 coming out of Portsmouth, a mighty big ship it is too!
PPS, petrol is 64p/litre in Luxembourg!

Just arrived home last night at 2330hr..(June 26). left Vianden Sunday 20 June and headed for northeastern France; spent time in Metz, Nancy, the Vosges mountains (fantastic - storybook villages), Alsace and the Ardennes. Left Zeebrugge Friday 25 at 1800hr for Rosyth, then ferry from Aberdeen to Kirkwall last night.

Vianden was great fun and I want to offer a vote of thanks to Marcel, Friedrich, Karel and Helmut for a fantastic job, beautifully done. And thanks for my prize for the second longest journey! I'm sorting through photos now so will send some for consideration for the website.

First sight of the Chateau at Vianden as I came in over the "top" road - wow

vianden.jpg

Helmut with a pound or so of raw meat for his lunch at the Stone Steak house Ettelbrück.

bierglas.jpg

First beer on arrival after a long day's riding.

Rideouts, especially the parade back from Esch with the police escort - fun, but tiring work trying to keep station with all the other bikes - I wouldn't want to ride like that all day

police1.jpg

Friendliness of the overwhelming majority of the people there. Helmut's contract with God about the weather. Not worth the beermat it was written on. Luxembourg must be the neatest, tidiest place I've ever seen.

Spending some time in Brugge on the way home. Bicycles. More bicycles. And yet more bicycles, all of whom thought I (and all other motorised traffic)was invisible..... but the upside was the clear benefits of all that cycling on the female derrieres around the city. Excellent. Not that I noticed a thing of course. Oh no. Not me

Mark

Memories of the trip:
Trying to keep up with 2 German guys on VFR's off the ferry who'd agreed to let me tag along for a hundred klicks or so until I got used to things. Kind of them. The straight bits were OK but trying to stay with them round the autoroute interchanges outside Bruxelles almost led to a trouser-changing incident. Ahem. Mistake. But I did get rid of those whiskery bits from the mould, on the edges of the tyres.

Briccone toscano

1° giorno

2° giorno

Da Zurigo a Basilea, poi ingresso in Germania; a metà strada fra Friburgo e Karlsruhe deviazione su Strasburgo, poi tutta Francia.

tanto stupore:

  • prima di tutto per il mio fisico che, a 47 anni per la prima volta, ha sopportato 2615 km in 5 giorni, con solo qualche doloretto al trapezio;
  • per il mio abbigliamento, che ha sopportato centinaia di km sotto l’acqua;
  • per la totale assenza di problemi della mia Dea;
  • per lo spirito con cui ca. 150 equipaggi hanno percorso tanta strada (e più di noi ne hanno fatta i britannici del nord ed una coppia svedese!) in pratica per consumare una cena insieme, fare una foto e ritirare due adesivi;
  • per il feeling stabilito con i miei compagni di viaggio (ieri sera ci siamo sentiti con Gibo e la domanda è stata: quando si riparte?);
  • per lo spirito di adattamento di Antonella – compagna di Gibo – che non si è mai lamentata, neanche dopo i 680 km. Filati del 4° giorno;

riconoscenza:

  • verso chi ha (mal) sopportato questa mia pazzia;
  • verso chi mi ha accompagnato in questa pazzia;
  • verso mia sorella che ci ha amorevolmente ospitato a Zurigo;
  • verso Mirò che ci ha procurato aste e bandiere (eravamo gli unici ad avere i vessilli innalzati!) e che, seppur a malavoglia, il venerdì sera ha accettato di venire con noi al ristorante, rinunciando alla brasserie;
  • verso Tiger Cris, che mi ha fornito gran parte dell’abbigliamento;
  • verso gli organizzatori che, bene o male non importa, si sono prodigati per il successo di questa manifestazione;

soddisfazione

Briccone (logorroico)

BRICCONE HA BEN CONDENSATO 5 GIORNI DI VIAGGIO ASSIEME NEL SUO RACCONTO PERTANTO NON MI DILUNGHERO' OLTRE SU QUESTO ASPETTO.
QUELLO CHE IO VORREI RACCONTARVI SONO LE SENSAZIONI CHE HO RICAVATO NELL'AFFRONTARE QUESTA AVVENTURA ( E NON PUO' CHIAMARSI DIVERSAMENTE VISTO L'INTENSITA' CHE AVUTO).

NON MI ERA MAI CAPITATO DI PERCORRERE COSI TANTA STRADA ASSIEME AD UN ALTRO MOTOCICLISTA PERCHE'  QUANDO CI HO PROVATO NEL PASSATO HO AVUTO ESITI NEGATIVI PUR SE TENTATO CON AMICI CONSOLIDATI SIN DALL'INFANZIA.

NEL CASO DEL NS. VIAGGIO CON BRICCONE E' STATO UN CAPIRSI SIN DALL'INIZIO, ABBIAMO VIAGGIATO DI CONSERVA CON UN PASSO SPEDITO PUR SENZA METTERSI D'ACCORDO SULL'ANDATURA DA TENERE.

ABBIAMO AVUTO FAME NELLO STESSO MOMENTO, NECESSITA' DI  SOSTE IDEM.

INSOMMA DOPO UNA ESPERIENZA DEL GENERE CI POTREMO ANCHE FIDANZARE !?!?.

SCHERZI A PARTE E' STATA VERAMENTE UNA ESPERIENZA ESALTANTE CHE LO E' DIVENTATA ANCOR DI PIU' GRAZIE A

L MIO "COMPAGNIUCCIO".

PERO' TUTTO QUESTO NON SAREBBE STATO POSSIBILE SE IL MIO 50% ANTONELLA NON FOSSE STATA ECCEZZZZIONALE NEL CONDIVIDERE QUESTA ESPERIENZA AL 100% ENTRANDO IN SIMBIOSI CON ME E LA NS. DEAUVILLE, SOPPORTANDO IN SILENZIO LE AVVERSITA' DEL TEMPO ED ANCHE LA ROTTURA DELL'INTERFONO NEGLI ULTIMI "800 KM".

CONCLUDO LA MIA VERSIONE DEI FATTI DICENDO CHE NON SO L'ANNO PROSSIMO COSA FARO' MA SE LA FA BRICCONE IO CI SARO'.

LAMPEGGIONI A TUTTI.
